The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Medicine , is currently recruiting for a Budget Analyst I . The selected candidate will establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff to provide the highest level of post-award management for sponsor-related funds. The incumbent will prepare and record journal entries and reconcile balance sheet accounts, as well as prepare monthly financial statements and variance explanations for the Department. The selected candidate will be the point of contact and advise PI on all financial transactions, such as travel, purchasing, or subcontracting.
This position will report to the Director of Grants and Contracts. With more than 400 full-time faculty members, Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine and is responsible for the education of more than 300 residents and fellows. Our current active research funding exceeds $160 million, over half of which comes from NIH and other federal agencies. With nearly 150 funded investigators, the department has an extensive research base in both the basic and clinical sciences and our research training programs are extensive and include basic, clinical, and translational research training awards. This position may allow for a partial telework schedule.

Primary Duties:
- Prepare account reconciliations and financial statements to include actual to budget variance explanations to the practice/department with accuracy.
- Reconcile budget based on approved budget by sponsor. Provides current and historical budget data to project expenditures and forecast income. Works with staff on identified potential ledger variances.
- Act as point of contact and advise PI on all financial transactions, such as travel, purchasing, or subcontracting.
- Generate and forward volume-based invoices to sponsors for payments. Applies knowledge of accounting practice to the area of specialty to ensure that transactions are properly handled.
- Reconcile accounts to ensure that all payments are accounted for and properly posted.
- Verify discrepancies and resolve sponsors' billing issues. Use independent judgment to determine acceptable options to resolve.
- Maintain financial historical records by filing documents. Examines a variety of documents for completeness, internal accuracy, and conformance with uniform accounting principles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field with a minimum of nine (9) credits in accounting.
Preferred Experience: Prior experience in financial analysis, management accounting, or budgeting is preferred.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Working knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Ability to apply basic analytical skills; to use calculators; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to perform basic mathematical computations; to operate personal computers and related software; to understand and apply budgetary policies and practices; to prepare and present budgetary reports and schedules; to operate manual and automated office equipment.
OTHER:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
Hiring Range: $55,609.75 - $61,463.41 ($57,000 - $63,000 post probation), commensurate with education and experience.
